AVVRG (Australia Vietnam Volunteer Resource Group) continues to provide dental care to children at Long Tan pre-school, Long Tan primary school, Nui Dat pre-school, as well as treating adults at the main clinic in Long Tan village. The AVVRG have been approached by other local communities to provide dental care. There is much potential for further growth of the project; however, they are in need of volunteers.

Colin Twelftree and Lesley Denny have decided to pre-set dates for each year, as many potential volunteers find it difficult to manage work obligations with short notice Dates are preset in advance and they are always looking for expressions of interest, or a definite commitment to make up a team.

[/accordion-item] [accordion-item title=”National Dental Foundation”] Many dental practitioners whilst under time constraints would like to be involved in assisting those in need. The National Dental Foundation provides the means for dentists and other dental industry personnel to maximise the time that they can donate for charity work. Our aim is to have every dentist in Australia donate one day per year.

Visit the National Dental Foundation website for more details.

Brisbane Youth Service (BYS) has established an occasional “pop-up” dental clinic service in Fortitude Valley. These clinics will operate for a week each quarter.

We need your help! Since 1977, BYS provides a range of services homeless and otherwise at risk young people (aged 12 – 25 years) and their children. Young people who come to BYS have significantly poorer health than the general community – some may never have attended a dentist. There are many identified barriers for young people to receive dental treatment, including transport difficulties and cost of treatment.

Appointments will include cleans, check-ups and simple fillings. Clients will be given oral hygiene instruction and made aware of further work required. Referral to specialists will be made when more advanced work is needed.

We believe this new service will significantly enhance the lives of young people experiencing homelessness and we hope you will consider partnering with us as volunteers at our new clinic.

If you are interested in sharing your time or expertise to deliver this important new service, please contact:

Nicole Cockburn (telephone 0423 657 240) for more information on clinical aspects of the program and the role of volunteers, or Philip Smith (07 3620 2447) for more information about Brisbane Youth Service and the client group we work with.

Do you have any other expertise? Do you want to deliver community based oral health promotion? We’re always looking for people to present to community groups and members. Do you have degrees, certificates, diplomas, masters, honours or a PHD? (eg. speaker, practice management, further qualifications) There may be ways you can represent the association
