Special Needs Hygienist |
Aside from being the mother of two very fine adult sons Margie Steffens’s – OAM, ADDH, B. Sc. Dent (Hons) – career has been varied and always interesting… and not always in dentistry!
For the past 24 years she has worked in the public sector in Special Needs Dentistry where she truly found her passion. Throughout this time she has had the privilege of furthering her study and, as an academic at the School of Dentistry University of Adelaide, has been able to implement a dream – to establish a pro-bono dental clinic serving marginalised and vulnerable communities within Adelaide and suburbs. The service is provided by volunteer dentists and our final year dental and oral health students- Community Outreach Dental Program located at Common Ground.
Currently she represents the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia (DHAA) on the National Aged Care Alliance and is the Chair for aged care for the association, and a member of Australian Society Special Care in Dentistry.
“I am grateful every day for the amazing colleagues with whom I work and the care we all provide for our patients and the opportunity to pass our skills and knowledge on to students and to share with each other,” says Margie.
