The volunteer team from DHAA WA attended a Family Fun Day to coincide with Children’s Week at Whiteman Park on Sunday 23 October, 2016.
Each year the Dental Hygienists of Australia stand was themed ‘Prevention of Dental Disease’ and is always very popular with the public, as we have various activities children can be involved in.
Kids were kept occupied by a colouring competition, healthy foods board game and the chance to discover the sugar content of common foods by lifting a flap and revealing how many teaspoons of sugar they include. This gave parents the opportunity to grab information sheets and discuss their children’s oral health, tooth brushing and diet. Telling feedback from the day was the difficulty that parents experienced in accessing dental services for 0-5 year olds.
Manual tooth brushing on models is always very popular where kids paint on artificial plaque and brush it off with toothpaste and manual brush. We also had an electric toothbrush demonstration with the ability to brush with the disposable heads and barriers in place.
Children received show bags from our team of tooth fairies with one lucky raffle winner going home with a battery-operated toothbrush.
Many hygienists and students volunteered their time today for which we are very grateful, and Wendy Wright, who organises this event, deserves congratulations for her tireless community service to the oral health industry.
