About the Speakers
Professor Laurie Walsh
Professor Laurence J Walsh AO is Australia’s leading authority on infection control in dentistry.
Laurence has published extensively on clinical microbiology and infection control topics, and has presented numerous international keynote lectures on infection control.
He is the editor of the ADA’s Infection Control Guidelines and a member of Standards Australia committees on sterilization and personal protective equipment. Laurence advises regulatory bodies including the CDNA and ACSQHC on infection control in dentistry. He has conducted practice audits for the Dental Board and for Qld Health public health units. He currently serves on the AHPRA professional standards panel.
Dr. Melanie Hayes
Dr Melanie Hayes is the Chief Executive Officer of the DHAA and a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. She is also a registered dental hygienist and holds Bachelor of Oral Health and Honours degrees. She obtained her PhD in 2013, on the topic of musculoskeletal disorders in the dental hygiene profession.
Dr Hayes has subsequently completely a Master’s in Education majoring in Career Development. In a rapidly changing profession, Melanie is keen to ensure that the DHAA provides all members with the support they need for professional growth and career development. Her interactive presentations aim to provide a unique opportunity for hygienists and OHTs to learn about career development across the lifespan, and how they may work towards fulfilling and meaningful careers.
Mr. John Cotterill
John graduated with a degree in psychology and has been working in Insurance for 10 years, utilising his analytical leanings and degree to deliver a client centred approach to insurance. The combination of the two means a robust understanding of insurance combined with a genuine care for peoples circumstances and how insurance relates to their every day life. John has a broad range of insurance experience from business to professional indemnity, cyber and intellectual property.
His presentation will cover examples of industry claims, ways to reduce practice risk and key aspects of the professional indemnity insurance policy, as well as other products available exclusively to DHAA members.

DHAA Members: To obtain the discounted DHAA Ltd Membership price you are required to be a financial member of the DHAA Ltd on the date of purchase.
Student Members: Student Members must be an eligible and current student member of the DHAA Ltd at the time of purchasing the ticket. DHAA Student Membership is free and expires on 30 June of the year following your graduation.
Cancellation Policy: 10 days notice must be given in writing to [email protected], if you cannot attend, to receive a refund. Reimbursements will not be made after this time. Registration can be transferred to another person of the same membership status.
