Lecture Details: What is Orofacial Myology
Orofacial Myology (OM) is treatment of the face, tongue, jaw and neck muscles to improve muscle function and tone. Orofacial Myology establishes the correct functional activities of these muscles so that normal growth and development may take place and progress in a stable and balanced environment. Given the complexity of this region, it is common to see abnormalities and imbalances develop, particularly in children.
Correct muscle function is paramount for normal growth and development and dental health. Crooked teeth, crowded mouths, small jaws and incorrect muscle function are often a consequence of an orofacial myofunctional disorder, which essentially means improper function of the orofacial muscles.
Orofacial Myology Therapy corrects muscle dysfunction, incorrect tongue rest posture and swallowing patterns (tongue thrust swallow) working on muscle tone to establish the correct functional activities of the tongue, lips and lower jaw.[hr style=”1″ margin=”20px 0px 20px 0px”]
