Communique August 2016
The third meeting of the DHAA Ltd. Board of Directors for 2016 was held on the 13th and 14th Of August in Canberra, ACT. This communique summarises key discussions and considerations from the meeting.
Website development and membership database
Josh Galpin, our IT Committee Chair presented a report to the Board updating us on the development of our website and members area. The new site has launched, and while there were a number of issues with membership renewals in the early phase, these appear to have now been rectified. The password rest function has been developed and tested and is now available to all members. We hope the members are enjoying the new look website, which provides valuable information on your association, all the upcoming CPD events, and functional members area. Remember to make sure your details are up to date so that you receive our communications and can be found using the “Find a Hygienist” function.
The DHAA recently represented Australian dental hygienists at the International Federation of Dental Hygiene House of Delegates meeting, held in Lucerne Switzerland. It was an amazing opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals from all over the world, and we were proud to contribute to decision making that will ensure the professional profile of dental hygiene practitioners is elevated, and that the IFDH grows and strengthens as an association. We were very excited to see Robyn Watson instated as President of the IFDH, and also to see our President and Delegate Melanie Hayes elected as Chair of the Education and Research Committee.
The 2016 Symposium in Hobart looks like it is going to be another successful event, with strong registrations, a fantastic program and a focus on celebrating the 25 year anniversary of the DHAA National Branch (www.hobartsymposium.com). The State and Territory Committees are also working tirelessly to offer the members CPD events on diverse topics, and in exciting locations – with a number of state holding joint events to ensure that our members on the ‘border’ get access to the high quality CPD events we run and value for their membership dollar. 2017 is already promising great events with a long weekend in Byron Bay, Christmas in July at Cradle Mountain, New Graduate Dinners and Balls – and let’s not forget the National Symposium in Adelaide.
More benefits to being a member
The Board continues to explore options to ensure we are meeting the needs of our membership. In response to member requests, we have now developed a member logo, which you may proudly display on your practice website or social media profile. This logo is available in the Member’s Area of the website. We are also trialing a Pharmacology Advice Line, where members can email or phone a Consultant Pharmacist who can clarify issues around drug interactions and side effects, antibiotic prophylaxis and other related issues. Information about this service, including contact details will be available in the Member’s Area of the website from September 1st. Finally, DHAA branded USBs will be provided as membership gifts at upcoming CPD events in your state.
The membership survey indicated broad support for the name change of our association, to the Dental Hygiene Association of Australia. The Board agreed to issue an official voting form to the membership; with a majority showing support the DHAA can legally proceed with the proposed change. Please look out for the invitation to vote in your inboxes.
The Board also approved an application for endorsement for the Oral-B Test-drive program and new by-laws. It also determined key dates for the Nomination and Voting of Directors and State Chairs, as well as dates for 2017 Board meetings.
The next Board meeting will be held on Sunday 13th November, 2016 in Hobart, Tasmania.
