Hands On Workshop  - Thursday 21 Sept

LA Update: Refining and revising your local anaesthetic techniques

Presented as an interactive hands on workshop by Cathy Snelling and Sophie Karanicolas

It has been well documented (Renton, 2018; de St Georges, 2004) that dental patients will come back to an operator if they ‘don’t hurt’ and give ‘painless injections’. This part of our clinical practice remains the biggest source of anxiety for our patients - and often it becomes one for operators if they are not confident and competent in their local anaesthetic techniques. By achieving the following outcomes, participants will have increased confidence and competence to apply to their clinical local anaesthetic practice.

In this 3-hour interactive workshop participants will:

  1. review the neuro-biology that underpins local anaesthesia (LA)
  2. revisit the key clinical landmarks to use in administering effective LA
  3. identify and discuss contemporary LA agents and techniques
  4. practice operator and patient positioning for optimising local anaesthetic administration
  5. bring everything that was covered in the workshop together through group activities that analyse a series of authentic scenarios
