- Apply strategies to open chair side conversations in relation to diet and nutrition
- Identify when to refer/referral pathways to a dietician or GP.
About our speaker:
Dr Kay Franks
PhD, MEdStudies, BOH, Cert DT, Dip BM
Dr Kay Franks is a registered Oral Health Therapist with more than 40 years clinical and management
experience in various locations throughout New South Wales. Kay holds a certificate of Dental
Therapy, an undergraduate Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of Newcastle, a Master
of Educational Studies and a PhD in Oral Health. Her area of research is diet and nutrition and
the Oral Health Therapy practice and its educational content and focus in the oral health therapy
teaching space. To support this research Kay has designed, implemented and evaluated a
video educational tool that simulates communication between the Oral Health Therapist and the
patient in the dental environment.
Kay has presented her research nationally and internationally, is the author of several
publications and has received three international awards for her poster presentation research.
Kay has worked in allied health education, University and VET sector teaching and has
experience in writing curriculum for several courses in the current Oral Health Therapy program
at the University of Newcastle. Kay leads the overseas BOHT student placement program in
Cambodia, a placement that has just completed its fourth year. This overseas placement has
research attached to the service-learning model and Kay is collaborating with the Cambodia oral
health services to analyze the retention of ART technique restorations placed by BOHT students
during the annual placement.
