TAS - Pain Medication: Your Role as a Health Professional
This event will feature a dentist and a pharmacist speaking from both perspectives about pain medication, triaging pain and medication side effects.
In Tasmania dental infections contribute a significant burden to emergency department presentations. Encouraging and facilitating patients to seek timely and appropriate primary care from dental practitioners can help lower the burden on our hospitals.
The accessibility of pharmacists means they are well placed in the community to help patients with preventative basic oral health advice, triage and referral to a dentist when needed.
This inter-professional learning session will cover:
- When to refer to a dentist for dental treatment
- Dental side effects of systemic medications
- Key tips to counsel patients on non-prescription dental products, provide basic oral health advice, and triage patients who need urgent dental care in community pharmacy
- When to refer to a pharmacist for a medcheck
- First and second line pain relief, what are the recommendations and implications
