Student Leadership Program - Webinar Series

Join us for a series of 4 webinars aimed at our student and early career members looking at leadership.

 

Once registered you will receive information and links to all 4 webinars you do not have to register for each webinar individually. If you have missed any webinars you will be able to catch up by watching on-demand in your own time. 

Objective:

To provide oral health students with relevant leadership skills to exert influence and control in themselves, their peers and their environment towards a positive and productive future supported by lifelong learning.

The program is designed to provide foundation understanding of aspects of leadership in order to stimulate participants’ interest to observe and experiment through their daily activities at the university and/or their work place. Participants may seek further trainings in leadership and management later in their career and build on exisiting knowledge and skills.

The program will enable participants to:

  • Describe and apply an ethical and values driven framework that drives thinking and practice towards a respectful and equal society.
  • Understand and exercise effective communication to achieve results.
  • Gain insight into building resilience and overcome obstacles.

These webinars are also suitable for early career practitioners. 4 webinar modules will be presented with 2 topics covered in each webinar. The webinars will be recorded for future on-demand viewing for each module.

The modules will be presented in the months of May, June, July and August.


Training Modules

Webinar 1 - Monday 17th May 2021

1. Introduction to leadership

Presenter: Associate Professor Melanie Hayes

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Outline various leadership styles.
  • List key elements of a successful leader.

2. Value, culture and ethics

Presenter: Ms Lyn Carman

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship of value, culture and behaviour.
  • Outline steps for ethical decision making.

 

Webinar 2 - Monday 7th June 2021 

3. Power and influence

Presenter: Mr Bill Suen

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • List different power sources.
  • Describe key strategies to motivate people. 

4. Communication

Presenter: Associate Professor Melanie Hayes

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Outline and determine communication styles.
  • List key aspects of successful negotiation.

Webinar 3 - Wednesday 21st July 2021  (new date)

5. Resilience

Presenter: Ms Lyn Carman

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Outline key stress factors.
  • Describe and apply strategies to manage stress.
  • Gain insight in viewing change as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

6. Problem solving and innovation

Presenter: Associate Professor Carol Tran

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Correctly identify and define the problem(s).
  • Describe factors supporting innovation.
  • Outline strategies to identify relevant solutions.

Module 4 - Thursday 12th August  

7. Altruism and leadership

Presenter: Mr Bill Suen

On completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the psychological, social and economic impact of altruism.
  • Describe how altruism shaped professional associations and directions.

8. Meet the leaders

Facilitator: Associate Professor Carol Tran

  • Leaders are invited to share their personal journey to their success.
