Enhancing Patient Care: When to Refer to a Periodontist - A Guide for Dental Hygienists - Dr Ranu Acharya

Welcome, dental hygienists! In this presentation, we will delve into the topic of enhancing patient care by understanding when to refer to a periodontist. Our focus will be on the new periodontal classification system and its implications for treatment planning.

We will begin by briefly exploring the previous periodontal classification system. In the new classification system, the incorporation of staging and grading allows for a comprehensive assessment of periodontitis severity, treatment requirements, and predictability of patient response.

As dental hygienists, you play a vital role in maintaining periodontal health. We will discuss the critical endpoints of periodontal treatment, emphasizing the importance of achieving shallow pockets and minimal bleeding on probing. These outcomes reflect optimal periodontal health and stability. We will also examine additional factors such as the patient's immune system, systemic health changes, and the efficacy of non-surgical therapy in challenging cases.

Determining when to refer a patient to a periodontist or continue non-surgical therapy can be a complex decision. We will address this conundrum, providing insights into the considerations involved. Case discussions and evidence-based insights will help us navigate the challenges and explore alternative treatment options for cases with persistent deep pockets and bleeding on probing.

Furthermore, we will emphasize the significance of supportive periodontal care. This ongoing maintenance approach aims to prevent disease recurrence, detect early signs of relapse, and sustain the periodontal health achieved through treatment. We will explore the components and importance of supportive periodontal care in achieving long-term patient outcomes.

By the end of this presentation, you will possess a comprehensive understanding of the new periodontal classification system, appreciate your vital role in periodontal maintenance, and gain insights into the considerations for referral to a periodontist. You will also recognize the significance of supportive periodontal care in optimizing patient outcomes. Thank you for your dedication to enhancing patient care, and I look forward to engaging in insightful discussions throughout the session.
