Dr Ying Shi Chang
BDS GradDip ClinDent (Surgical Dentistry) (USYD) DClinDent Oral Surgery (USYD)

Dr Ying Shi Chang is a board registered Specialist Oral Surgeon, having obtained her specialist qualifications from the University of Sydney. She is committed to and is passionate about teaching and equity of care. She is a lecturerin Oral Surgery at the School of Dentistry, University of Sydney, involved in the education and training of both graduate and post-graduate students. Dr Chang is a Visiting Dental Officer (Oral Surgery) at Nepean Centre for Oral Health, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, NSW Health and is in specialist private practice in both Gosford and Kogarah, NSW.


Professor Dileep Sharma
 BDS, MDS (Periodontics), PhD

Professor Dileep Sharma is Head of Discipline, Oral Health at School of Health Sciences, College of Health, Medicine & Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. Dileep brings a wealth of teaching experience within sixteen years as health professional and clinical educator across Asia, Africa and Australia. Dileep commenced his leadership role at the University of Newcastle after previously holding the role of Senior lecturer (2016-2022) and Associate Professor in Periodontics (2022) at the College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University (JCU). Dileep has been very passionate and successful undergraduate research coordinator in his role at JCU as evidenced by student achievements including multiple conference prizes and publications in peer-reviewed journals under his mentorship. Additionally, he has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and invited conference presentations on dental materials and oral cancer prevalence in Australia. Recently, his research team was awarded the Clarks Family Award for Sustainable Dental Materials research by Australian Dental Research Foundation and the 2022 ANZ Joan Chong Award in Dental Materials by the International Association for Dental Research.

Additionally, Dileep has extensive experience as principal and co-investigator for various externally funded research projects with various funders including Australian Dental Research Foundation and Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre, Australia. Previously, Dileep has been Councillor for Far North Queensland Section of the International Association for Dental Research, ANZ division (2018-2022). Furthermore, he currently serves as a peer-reviewer for various Q1 journals within dentistry and materials journals and a guest editor on multiple special issues focusing on contemporary topics such as dental implants and COVID-19. He sits on the reviewer panel for various funding bodies including National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Dental Research Foundation and Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre.


Cathy Boyce
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist (OMT) Oral Health Therapist (OHT)

Cathy is an experienced Oral Health Therapist and Myofunctional Therapist (Australian Academy of Orofacial Myology) who has had a lifelong passion for physiological and holistic health improvement and a proven track record of health improvement advocacy in dental and allied health fields. She is also a trained breathing re educator-and, has completed courses specific to TMJ dysfunction and has been offering OMT to her clients via telehealth for the past 4 years. Her ability to engage, encourage, and educate her clients and their families is demonstrated in the health improvement outcomes her clients continue to experience. Cathy experienced airway restrictions, tonsil, and adenoid surgery, open mouth breathing and orthodontic treatment as a youngster and the effects were further encountered during her athletic ‘career’ as a cross-country runner, basketball player, and coach.

She understands the interplay between the form and function of oral/facial/airway consideration and the health benefits that can be achieved with early or timely intervention where necessary. Cathy has a passion for self-education/professional development which is supported by her philosophy that ‘one can never stop learning! She is currently the vice president of the Australian Association of Orofacial Myology, hosts a podcast called ‘Beyond Brushing-Optimised Oral Health Outcomes’, and loves nothing more than hanging with her friends, family and especially her gorgeous grandchildren!

 

Lecture Synopsis:

When to Consider Referring to an Oral Surgeon & How to Work in a Multidisciplinary Team

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand when to refer to an oral surgeon

2. Determine when to refer and when to monitor oral pathology

3. Importance of early detection with focus on Neoplasms and malignancies in the mouth.

Diagnosis of periodontal disease and management approaches- An update
- Professor Dileep Sharma

This presentation will provide an update on various aspects of periodontal disease management including accurate diagnosis based on the 2017 classification of Periodontal diseases involving staging and grading. This will be followed by the overview of treatment approaches based on the specific clinical presentation including radiographic findings. To conclude, a brief outline on the recent advances in within the field of surgical and non-surgical management of periodontal diseases will be provided.

2. To better understand treatment options based on clinical presentation
3. To understand the principles of patient-centered approach in long-term management

      If notification is received:

      More than 5 working days before the event:

      - A partial refund less a cancellation fee of 10% of the registration fee will be given.

      Less than 5 working days before the event:

      - Event registration fees will not be refunded 5 working days from the event as catering will have been finalised and therefore incurred non-refundable costs to the DHAA.

      Alternatively, the event registration may be transferred to another person of the same DHAA membership status up to 24 hours prior to the event - please contact [email protected] to arrange a transfer.

      Non Attendance
      If a registered attendee fails to attend an event for which they have registered, the event registration fees will not be refunded.
