We know that successful oral health outcomes are only possible with patient cooperation, however as much as we would love our patients to brush twice a day, clean between their teeth daily and make their oral health a priority we know this is not the case for many of our patients. Its likely that some of our patients will not do it at all. Is this a lack of motivation or does it have something to do with the way we as clinicians motivate our patients in their appointments . The traditional method of oral hygiene instructions where patients are "spoken to " and not involved in the process does not work , patients need to make their own decisions on what they would like their oral health outcomes to be and set their own goals on how they will achieve them. this lecture will go through motivational interviewing and modern techniques for motivating the patient to take harness of their own oral health and improve their long term outcomes

Applications and Implications of Airflow Prophylaxis in Restorative Dentistry
Contemporary restorative dentistry relies on developing the best possible adhesive interface
between the tooth structure and the restoration. Key to this is creating the ideal tooth surface to
ensure optimal mechanical and chemical bonding when using adhesive restorative materials.
Clinicians frequently use a range of etchants, conditioners, primers and bonding agents in the
adhesive process, but they may not achieve ideal results if the tooth surface has not been effectively cleaned prior to the surface preparation. This hands-on workshop will look at the use of the EMS airflow prophylaxis to create more predictable tooth surface preparation for preventive and restorative procedures.
Topics to be covered include:
- Understanding the concepts of Clean, Protect, Restore and Maintain
- Predictable tooth surface cleaning and protecting exposed root surfaces
- Optimising airflow prophylaxis powders to various restorative procedures
- Optimising adhesive interfaces and increasing longevity of restorations
- Managing subgingival restorations and gingival inflammation
- Patient friendly procedures – making it easier for the young, old, and anxious patients

While it was stressful at times, work was stimulating and dynamic, involved problem-solving and was energising.For some people, their job is still exactly that. Speaker Biographies:
Tabitha Acret
BOH
Tabitha Acret graduated from Newcastle University Australia with a Bachelor of Oral health and is currently studying her Masters in Public Health at Charles Darwin University. Tabitha was previously the National Vice-President for the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia and has volunteered in many roles since graduation for the association. Tabitha also previously worked as a clinical educator at Sydney University and currently works as a clinical educator for implant maintenance and non surgical periodontal therapy. Tabitha lectures nationally and internationally on motivating patients , implant maintenance and disease prevention and periodontal therapy . Outside of her busy work life of lecturing and working clinically in private practice Tabitha enjoys volunteering both locally and internationally to raise awareness and education of the benefits of good oral health.
Winner of the 2018 leadership award in dental hygiene and 2019 award for clinical excellence, Tabitha had dedicated her professional life to continued learning and sharing her passion with the dental community.
Professor Ian Meyers OAM
BDSc, FRACDS, FICD, FADI, FPFA
Professor Ian Meyers is a general dental practitioner in Brisbane, Australia and is an honorary professor at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Professor Meyers has over thirty five years of combined experience in dental research, clinical dentistry, private practice, university clinics and hospital based dental clinics.
He is a Fellow and Board Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and of the International College of Dentists, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has served on numerous ADA national committees and is a long standing member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Australian Dental Journal. In 2017 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to dentistry, to professional associations, and to tertiary education.
Among his previous positions Professor Meyers has been the Colgate Chair of General Practice Dentistry at The University of Queensland, the Chief Dental Officer for Queensland Health, and President and CEO of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association.
As a general dental practitioner, Ian Meyers has extensive experience in comprehensive patient care, and has a special interest in diagnosis and management of worn and broken down dentition, geriatric and aged care dentistry, adhesive restorative dental materials, fibre-reinforced composites, and the management of patients through minimum intervention dentistry. Ian lectures both nationally and internationally on these topics, and is a consultant to a number of dental companies.
Associate Professor Deborah Cockrell
BDS, PhD
Having migrated to Australia as an Oral Surgeon in 1996, Deb has worked in a range of roles and in various clinical and non-clinical settings. Deb’s academic career initially involved Oral Surgery teaching, culminating in her obtaining her PhD in dental education, and later becoming the first Head of Discipline of Oral Health at the University of Newcastle. She was the first female President of the ADA (ADA NSW Branch) and has also chaired the ADC. Deb has an MBA and Board experience; she is currently Director (Oral Health) at CERA and a Professional Officer for the Dental Council of NSW. 2020 has allowed Deb the luxury of creativity which has become increasingly important to her life/work balance.
Dr Alex Holden
BDS, LLM, MDPH, MComDent, PhD
Dr Alex Holden is a dentist and academic based at the University of Sydney School of Dentistry within the Discipline of Population Oral Health. Alex's teaching and research focuses on the social aspects of dentistry and he is particularly interested in the relationship between commercialism and professionalism. He has completed specialist training in Public Health Dentistry at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Alex is a Director and Board member of the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch and the association's charity, Filling the Gap. Alex also works closely with NSW Health. Alex is a Fellow by examination of both the Australasian College of Legal Medicine and the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).
