Multi-disciplinary treatment planning for Orthodontic-Periodontal cases

 

A prerequisite for orthodontic therapy for any patient is periodontal health. Orthodontic tooth movement has significant biologic effects on the periodontal compartment, and may affect the architecture of the gingival apparatus. This lecture aims to discuss the interplay between orthodontic, dental implant and periodontal treatment planning.

About our speakers: Dr Elise McConnell & Dr Hugh Lenehan

 

Dr Elise McConnell

Orthodontist

Dr Elise McConnell is a registered specialist orthodontist with the Dental Board of Australia. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Dental Surgery with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide and a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics from the University of Sydney.

Dr McConnell was awarded the University Medal for her academic achievements. She was also the recipient of the John McDonald Medal for first place internationally in her clinical cases (RCS Edinburgh). Dr McConnell holds memberships with the Australian Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, European Orthodontic Society, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh & is also a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists.

Dr McConnell has been in private practice since 2017 & based in Canberra during this time. She has a particular interest in orthodontic treatment for children utilising the latest equipment & techniques. She comes from a family of dentists & is married to a Canberra based specialist Periodontist, Dr Hugh Lenehan.

Dr Hugh Lenehan

Periodontist

Following completion of a Bachelor of Medical Science degree, Hugh completed a Bachelorof Dentistry with Honours in 2009. He then worked as a Dental Officer at the WestmeadCentre for Oral Health followed by private practice in Mount Gambier, South Australia.

During this time, Hugh completed the primary and secondary examinations becoming a Fellow in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. In order to pursue a strong interest in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, Hugh completed specialist training (Doctor ofClinical Dentistry) in Periodontics in 2016 and was awarded the Dentsply award for research in bone augmentation.

He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy ofPeriodontists, Australian Society of Periodontology and the International Team for Implantology. Hugh has worked in Canberra and Sydney as a periodontist since 2017 undertaking an array of periodontal and dental implant related procedures.

When not engulfed in taking care of patients, Hugh is a full time paediatric chef for his wife Elise and 3 children.
