Lecture Synopsis:

What should oral health professionals know about Molar Hypomineralisation and chalky teeth? - Prof Mike Hubbard

Thanks to The D3 Group's 'Chalky Teeth Campaign' (www.chalkyteeth.org), the public is becoming increasingly aware of molar hypomineralisation (MH) as a major and potentially preventable risk factor for childhood tooth decay.

Alas, many dental professionals aren't up to speed on MH, at clinical level and beyond. Using straightforward "translational lingo" appropriate for the whole dental team, this presentation will cover MH basics, outline two exciting breakthroughs from 2020, and then address audience enquiries via extended Q&A.

Pharmacological management of dental pain, with a focus on opioids - Dr Leanne Teoh

This talk will provide a practical update on pain relief in dentistry, discussing the appropriate role and effectiveness of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids for dental pain. The focus will be on the adverse effects and recommendations of these medicines. The limitations and other issues pertaining to the use of opioids will also be highlighted

The Tooth Fairy’s best friend: embedding oral health literacy into dental practice - Cathryn Carboon

Oral health literacy has emerged as an important determinant of health. There is a growing realisation of the importance of health literacy in public health and dental settings, as research shows poor oral health literacy is linked to poor oral health outcomes.

Research has shown a gap in children’s oral health literacy regarding knowledge and understanding of fluorides for preventing dental caries. Given that the use of fluorides has the largest evidence base for any preventive oral health intervention, this presentation will explore the fluoride messages parents and children are accessing and the impact of social media on oral health literacy.

‘The Tooth Fairy’s best friend’ oral health literacy project will be discussed to show how children can engage in learning about the benefits of fluoride with fun, age-appropriate literacy resources which are linked to the child’s cognitive ability level. The resources can be shared within dental practices, schools, libraries and families, involving parents and teachers to achieve a greater oral health literacy impact.

Oral Medicine Refresher for General Practice - Dr Katrusha Hull

The diagnosis of common oral mucosal conditions of often a challenge requiring the differentiation of pathology from mucosal features which fall within the spectrum of what is considered "normal" plus the distinction between benign and sinister. This talk will go through the features of normal, health oral mucosa and the common oral mucosal conditions seen in practice including their management. 

Speaker Biographies

Prof Mike Hubbard

Prof Mike Hubbard is Founder/Director of The D3 Group for developmental dental defects (D3s) and its public-facing Chalky Teeth Campaign, author of a children's storybook about "chalky molars" (molar hypomineralisation), and senior scientist behind the recent breakthrough in understanding pathogenesis of "chalky enamel spots" (demarcated opacities) – a major yet widely overlooked contributor to childhood tooth decay.

After training as a dentist in New Zealand, Mike gained a PhD in biochemistry and spent most of his career as a biomedical scientist investigating intricacies of intracellular messaging (cell signalling).

Recently he turned his clinical and scientific experiences towards establishing a child-health-centric translational enterprise based in Melbourne, Australia – one outcome of which is The D3 Group's research and education network embracing stakeholders from across the sector and in 46 countries (www.thed3group.org).

Dr Leanne Teoh

B,DSc(Hons) B,Pharm)Hons) PhD

Dr Leanne Teoh is a practicing pharmacist and dentist, and a research fellow at Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne, Her research focus is on various aspects of medicine use in dentistry and dental prescribing practices, She co-authored the Therapeutic Guidelines Oral and Dental Version 2, is on the reviewer board for the journal Antibiotics MDPI, and is part of the Australian Dental Association Therapeutics Committee, She is a lecturer and coordinator for the dental therapeutics program for the Doctor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Oral Hygiene courses, Leanne has received several awards and scholarships, including the International College of Dentists Community Oral Health Award for 2018, and recently the Ernest Joske Award at Melbourne Dental School for research impact and publications.

Cathryn Carboon

RDH, Master Health Prom

Cathryn is a registered dental hygienist and holds a Master of Health Promotion from Deakin University. Cathryn has had a diverse and extensive career in the dental industry over 35 years, including work in general practice, orthodontics, periodontics and special needs dentistry. Cathryn has practiced as a hygienist in Australia, Germany and New Zealand and has spent the last 22 years in private practice in Wangaratta.

Cathryn brings with her extensive clinical knowledge and experience, and has been a valued Colgate Professional Educator since 2006; working closely with Melbourne, La Trobe, RMIT and Charles Sturt Universities to educate the future dental profession. Cathryn is a knowledgeable and engaging lecturer and presenter and is currently completing her TAE qualification. Cathryn has presented at dental and allied health conferences in Australia, Hong Kong and Italy.

Cathryn has been a member of the DHAA since 1988 and is currently on the Victorian Branch Committee. Cathryn served 10 years on the SARRAH Advisory Committee, as National Network Coordinator for Oral Health. Cathryn is a Carevan Foundation Board Director and manages the Sun Smiles school fluoride varnish program. She has won multiple awards including the International Federation of Dental Hygienists & Global Child Dental Fund Social Responsibility Award and the DHAA National Oral Health Award for Community Service.

Cathryn authored the children’s picture book ‘Who is the Tooth Fairy’s best friend?’ which has been distributed around the world since its DHAA launch in 2017. She is a member of the International Health Literacy Association and is a passionate advocate for oral health literacy.

Dr Katrusha Hull 

BDS, DClinDent Oral Medicine

Dr Katrusha Hull is a specialist in oral medicine having qualified from dentistry in 2003 from Sydney University and completing her specialist training in oral medicine in 2009. Katrusha has subsequently been awarded a PhD for research into the underlying mechanisms of graft-versus-host disease following stem cell transplantation. 

Katrusha has a particular interest in the diagnosis and management of oral dermatological diseases, potentially malignant oral lesions and the oral complications associated with stem cell transplantation. Katrusha holds specialist positions at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Monash Medical Centre and the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. She also works in private practice within the Melbourne medical precinct in Parkville.
