The use of dental implants has revolutionised dental treatment however, are you prepared to identify the signs and symptoms of possible implant failure even before the implant is placed? Whilst dental implants have revolutionised dentistry they have not come without their own set of problems. That is why a comprehensive and collaborative approach to implant placement and care involving all key stakeholders is paramount. Many complications can occur with implants and can present early after insertion or sometimes years later. These complications could be preventable by following proper implant placement and maintenance guidelines and working cooperatively as a team in the best interests of the patient.

This interactive presentation will arm you with the latest research and tools to educate your collaborative team of dentists, hygienists/OHTs and patients on the best way to care for implants even before they are placed. Creating a preventive partnership will dramatically increase the success of your implants and your practice. Moreover, there are few things more rewarding in dentistry than restoring our patients' teeth and smile with implants. Incorporating the scientifically backed gold standard of implant maintenance gives your patients every chance to have a lifetime solution that keeps them coming back as happy patients.

One in three women will experience physical or sexual violence in their life time, as dental professionals and members of the healthcare team we are in a unique position to help identify and refer victims of domestic violence . This lecture will cover what is domestic violence, what are some of the signs to identify, how can dental professionals help and how to refer.

Tabitha Acret
BOH (UON)

Tabitha is a dedicated and passionate award-winning Dental Hygienist. She studied a Bachelor or Oral Health at Newcastle University after working as a Dental Nurse and Practice Manager for 10 years and graduated in 2008. Since qualifying, Tabitha has become one of the most sought-after Hygienists and Educators in Australia and internationally with a fast-growing and loyal customer base of patients, dental professionals and media. Outside of her busy work life of lecturing and working clinically in private practice Tabitha enjoys volunteering both locally and internationally to raise awareness to change the way oral health care is delivered to patients.  

Dr Sarah Chaw
BDSc (Hons) (UQ), DClinDent (Oral Med) (UQ), MRACDS (Oral Med), FOMAA

Dr Sarah Chaw is a registered specialist in Oral Medicine. She graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science with first class honours and was a recipient of multiple academic and research awards. She then completed her specialist training in Oral Medicine with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry from the University of Queensland. Sarah is a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia, and holds Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Field Stream of Oral Medicine. She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as an Associate Lecturer in Oral Medicine and Pathology at the University of Queensland, and has published in and served as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals. Sarah is currently working in private practice at Queensland Oral Medicine (Wickham Terrace). Her clinical interests include orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders, mucosal and mucocutaneous disease, potentially malignant disorders and oral oncology. Sarah practices the full range of Oral Medicine, which includes the diagnosis and management of Oral Diseases, Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders and Dental Sleep Medicine.

Associate Professor Carol Tran 
BOH, PhD

Carol is the Head of Course for Oral Health at CQUniversity (Rockhampton). She graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health at the University of Melbourne and completed her PhD on ‘Dental Implant Debridement methods’ at the University of Queensland (UQ). During this time, she was awarded a Medical/Dental NHM&RC scholarship and held numerous Australian Dental Research Foundation grants. She has completed numerous research projects spanning from dental caries diagnosis and management, in vitro material science, biofilm removal, periodontal and implant diseases, emergency dental care for children, health interventions, workforce studies to dental education. Carol was a Lecturer in the Dentistry and Oral Health programs at UQ, she was a year level coordinator, a mentor to supervisors, and providing clinical and theoretical knowledge to students. Carol is an active member in the Dental Hygienists’ Association of Australia, starting off as a CPD member, then progressing to state chair, an executive board member and is currently the Vice President. She is also a member of IADR, ASP and a number of dental journals. Carol has worked across public, private, general and specialist dental practices in Victoria and Queensland for more than 13 years.
Dr Sep Tabatabaee has completed a three-year orthodontic training at the University of Queensland where he obtained a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics. He successfully finished UK qualification exams (MOrth).

Dr Sepeher Tabatabee
Dr Sep currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics at Griffith University, teaching orthodontics to future dentists. Dr Sep has published in different fields in dentistry including periodontics and endodontics (European Endodontic Journal and presented his research in orthodontics at the International Association for Dental Research conference (IADR) in 2015 at Ottago university. He regularly attends local and international conferences and belongs to several dental study groups. Outside of dentistry, he spends most of his free time playing tennis and doing long distance running. He likes to consider himself as a whiskey connoisseur and a movie critic! Dr Sep's practices are located in Nundah and Caboolture.
