Dr Avanti Karve
Dr Avanti Karve is a dedicated advocate for her patients with special health care needs with a focus managing oral health to improve general health. Avanti completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery with the University of Adelaide in 2003 and returned home to Sydney to become the first graduate of the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry) program with the University of Sydney. She also completed a concurrent Master of Health Science in Developmental Disability (2007-2010).
Avanti currently shares her time between her private practice Mind Body Teeth at Sydney Adventist Hospital for inpatient and outpatient care and Westmead Hospital, Sydney West Local Health District (Staff Specialist- Special Needs Dentistry).
Avanti is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) and currently serves as the Past President of the Australia New Zealand Academy of Special Needs Dentistry (ANZASND) and Education Committee of the International Association for Disability Oral Health (iADH). She is a member of the CERA Geriatric Oral Health Reference Group, Australian Society of Special Care Dentistry (ASSCID) and Australian Dental Association (ADA).
As a lifelong learner, Avanti is committed to learning, teaching and research. She coordinates the undergraduate program in Special Needs Dentistry as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer with the University of Sydney. She lectures extensively for the University and at numerous national and international conferences.

The first 1000 days is the period during which many vital skills and abilities develop for newborns and patterns of wellbeing take shape. There are multiple social determinates of health (SDH) which play a critical role in establishing not only systemic, but oral health as well. This presentation will highlight societal/parental trends and specific oral, dental and developmental issues which can impact the oral health status of pre-school children – leading to possible complications into adulthood.
- What are the Social Determinants of Health, particularly with respect to general systemic and oral health

Dr Kareen Mekertichian
Kareen Mekertichian is a specialist Paediatric Dentist in private practice, establishing the first specialist referral practice in Sydney, Australia in 1995. Kareen completed his dental degree in 1986 at the University of Sydney and obtained his Postgraduate training at Westmead, completing his Masters in 1993. Kareen obtained his Primary Fellowship (RACDS) in 1989 and subsequent Secondary Fellowship in 1992 - continuing his close association
with Westmead Centre for Oral Health and the Children’s Hospital Westmead as a visiting specialist.
Kareen’s long-standing experience in clinical dentistry is matched by an ongoing involvement in providing continuing education and teaching. Kareen is an active member of numerous National and International organisations involved in clinical care and research, relating to the child patient. Kareen continues his executive role on several dental bodies, as well as examiner for the RACDS and the Postgraduate Paediatric Dentistry Masters course at Westmead Centre for Oral Health. Kareen is the immediate Past-President of AAPD and regularly contributes as a key advisor to several industry and specialist dental groups.
Kareen’s interests relate to providing clinically relevant, simple yet successful management options in dealing with the day-to-day challenges facing all clinicians involved in the care of children.
Hopeless Prognosis: Is There Such a Thing? - Dr Ehsan Mellati
The lecture is an overview of important factors in the decision-making process to determine whether a periodontally compromised tooth can be salvaged or not.
Dr Ehsan Mellati
Dr Ehsan Mellati is a periodontist in private practice in Sydney and the founder of the state-of-the-art Precision Periodontics in Chatswood. His practice is restricted to periodontics and implant dentistry. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Sydney University and is also involved in teaching/mentorship at several Periodontics and Dental Implant related graduate programs. Ehsan received the prestigious ITI grant for his postgraduate thesis focusing on the healing of hard and soft tissues around immediate implants. He has published several articles in well-respected international journals and has been actively involved in presenting lectures, running CPD events, and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and overseas-trained dentists. He is an active member of the International Team for Implantology, Australian Dental Association, Australian Society of Periodontology, and Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists.
Cracked teeth - Dr Laura Blackmore
“Cracked teeth” is one of the most potentially confusing and misunderstood topics in dentistry. Cracks can represent a weakness in the tooth structure, and are also a pathway for bacteria to enter the tooth, which in turn causes the tooth to become symptomatic and potentially requires treatment. This lecture will help you to identify when a tooth is at risk of progressing from a crack to a fracture, understand the treatment options when a tooth is at risk of fracturing and potential sequelae, recognise symptoms that patients may experience with a cracked tooth and
understand and identify when to refer to a dentist for further assessment and treatment.

Dr Laura Blackmore
Dr Laura Blackmore currently works in private practice on Sydney’s Northern Beaches full time. Dr Laura is a highly accomplished dental professional with a passion for providing exceptional dental care to patients of all ages. Graduating at the top of her class as a Dental Hygienist from the University of Newcastle in 2015, she received the prestigious Faculty of Health Sciences Medal and the Colgate Prize for her outstanding performance as a final-year student. Driven by her dedication to the field, Dr Laura continued her academic journey at Charles Sturt University, where she completed her Bachelor of Dental Science in 2020 and was honoured with the Dean’s Award for maintaining a Distinction average.
As a member of the Australian Dental Association, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, and the Australian Society of Periodontology, Dr Laura brings invaluable expertise to her practice. Her diverse experience includes working in specialist periodontal, prosthodontic and holistic/functional dental practices.

Dr Jad Clarke
Jad graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2001. After nine years working in general practice in Wollongong and Sydney, he returned to the University to complete Specialist Paediatric Dentistry training. He holds positions as Staff Specialist, Dept. of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at Westmead Centre for Oral Health; Senior Visiting Dental Specialist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Wagga Wagga Base Hospital; and is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney and University of New South Wales. Jad has over 10 years experience in Paediatric Dentistry and is a strong advocate for integrating child dental care into a broader health care management plan. He is highly experienced in working with children with additional needs and dental anxiety, and in treating dental emergencies and trauma.

Jenine Bradburn
Jenine Bradburn is the National President and Executive Chair of the Australian Dental Prosthetists Association Ltd. Jenine has been actively involved in the association since graduating as a dental prosthetist in 1994 and has held Executive and Board roles since 1999. Jenine is currently on the International Federation of Denturists (IFD) Board and a member of IFD’s Education Subcommittee.
Jenine has had ongoing involvement with the Australian Dental Council (ADC), since 2013, as a member of their Register of Assessors, assisting the ADC in periodically reviewing dental programs seeking accreditation. In 2020, Jenine was appointed to the ADC Professional Competencies Advisory Committee, which reviewed the professional competencies of a newly qualified dental practitioner.
As well as her role with ADPA Ltd Jenine currently works in private practice as well as lecturing for the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics at TAFE NSW.
In addition to her qualifications as both a Dental Technician and Dental Prosthetist Jenine has a Diploma of Business and in 2023 Jenine completed the Foundations of Infection Prevention and Control certificate with the Australian College of Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC).
Jenine’s passion for the dental profession extends to having a keen interest in aged care. She has been a regular volunteer with Alzheimer’s Australia and previously held a position on the Board of Directors at Carers’ Australia (NSW) from 2012 - 2017.
In her spare time, Jenine participates in BJP (Bjelke-Petersen School) Physical Culture, a sport she has competed in since she was 6 years of age. She also loves nothing more than spending time with her dog Missy, a Chinese Crested Powder Puff.
