From Talk to Walk - Aged Care Oral Health
- Dr Mark Wotherspoon
The Royal Commission into Residential Aged Care heard evidence of the appalling state of dental and oral health in Australia’s residential aged care facilities.
There are nearly 190,000 of Australia’s most vulnerable people living in residential care. Many are suffering due to poor dental and oral health and a lack of access to appropriate services.
“Dentures left in for weeks, teeth not cleaned for days and sometimes weeks, broken teeth lacerating gums and tongues, extensive tooth decay, advanced gum disease fast-tracking the person to potentially fatal aspirational pneumonia, fillings falling out, pain, swelling and oral cancers in all stages.
The Federal Government has repeatedly ignored the ADA’s requests over the last 3 decades to better fund and support the well overdue changes in policy to improve the oral health and dignity of our vulnerable, frail and elderly citizens in Aged Care facilities or receiving supported living at home.
What can we do without Govt assistance that will make a big difference for our frail elderly and is financially viable and stress free?
- Understand the existing status of oral health and hygiene in Aged Care
- Recognise Portable Dentistry rationale – Why? How? What?
- Understand the benefits of tele-dentistry in aged care
- How to Upskill and Educate Nursing Care Staff – Project Gordon and iTOP Seniors.

Mental Health & Well-being of Australian Dental Practitioners
This presentation will provide an overview of mental health and wellbeing in Australian dental practitioners, and look at strategies that practitioners can use to manage their mental health and wellbeing. Mental health conditions are common in the Australian population, and our research has highlighted that this is also true for dental practitioners, with depression, anxiety disorder, psychological distress, burnout and thoughts of suicide commonly reported. This presentation will discuss some of these findings, and some strategies that practitioners can use to manage their own mental health and wellbeing.
