Speaker Biographies

Dr Chris Jacobs

Dr Chris Jacobs completed his dentistry degree at Stellenbosch University in 2002 Cape Town, South Africa. He went on to complete his post-graduate studies in Dento-alveolar surgery and Dental Implantology in 2005. Since 2007 he has been based in Launceston practicing dentistry, placing and restoring dental implants. As well as being accredited by Somnodent for Dental Sleep Medicine, Dr Chris Jacobs completed the ADC examination process in 2009 and remains connected to various associations and affiliations to stay informed and educated. He is a member of the International Team of Implantology and the Australasian Osseointegration Society. Dr Chris Jacobs has always valued the collaborative approach in patient care through incorporating the oral health therapist or dental hygienist as part of the clinical team.

Dr Alex du Bois

Dr Alex du Bois, Doctor of Clinical Dentistry, was born in Cape Town, South Africa and spent a big part of his childhood living in Germany and the Czech Republic before completing his dentist training in South Africa. From there, he moved to Launceston in 2007 and fell in love with Tassie. Alex completed the Australian Dental Association Exam to recognise his dental degree in Australia and was accepted into the specialist training program (Periodontics) at the University of Adelaide in 2009. After completing his training in 2012, he worked in a busy specialist group practice in Adelaide for four years. With a growing family he and his wife, a General Medical Practitioner, returned to Tasmania and established Hobart Periodontics. Alex is an honorary Tasmanian and loves the beautiful environment and healthy lifestyle Australia offers. He believes in maintaining a healthy work/life balance because ‘life is too short’ and this is why he has a passion for helping his patients and spending time with family and friends in the great outdoors.

With the help of a devoted and highly skilled team, Dr Alex du Bois performs most of his work on patients from his Collins Street practice or one of the local private hospitals. He continues to stay connected, informed and educated through numerous memberships and affiliations, including Australian and New Zealand Association of Periodontists (ANZAP), International Team for Implantology, (ITI), Australian Society of Periodontology, Australian Osseointegration Society and The Australian Dental Association (ADA). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS).

Dr Gavin Quek

Gavin is a dentist who graduated from the University of Adelaide and is currently working in both public and private settings. He currently serves as Secretary and Councillor for ADA TAS and Chairs the Governance and Oral Health Promotion Committee. He also serves as Vice-Chair of ADA Federal’s Oral Health Committee. He was recently awarded Hobart’s Young Citizen of the Year and is the 2023 Premier’s Young Achiever of the Year. Gavin also gave a TEDx talk about curiosity and his passion for oral and general health. He is a current volunteer with the Australian Dental Health Foundation (ADHF) at Kingston Beach Dental and has a passion for educating fellow dental professionals in dentistry.

Dr Ioan Jones

Dr Ioan Jones has been working as a public health dentist for over 26 years. Ioan has been working for Oral Health Services Tasmania since 2010 coordinating education and training and more recently has taken on the role of Clinical Director. Ioan has always had an interest in dental education both previously in the UK and now in his new home of Australia and is passionate about increasing the knowledge of health professionals on how poor dental and oral health, has an impact on general health. As well as being a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the University of Tasmania Centre for Rural Health, Ioan is also an Associate Professor with James Cook University and Adjunct Associate Professor with La Trobe University.

Dr Ruthy Hernandez

Dr Ruthy is a facial aesthetic dentist who owns a private dental and aesthetic practice in Launceston, Tasmania. Her brand is a household name well-recognised in Northern Tasmania as a leader in the field of advance non surgical cosmetic enhancement and aesthetic dentistry. Dr Ruthy's philosophy as a dentist and cosmetic injector is about helping patients find confidence that extends beyond her client's smile. She is a pioneer of injectable beauty in the dental industry and an advocate for safe, professional and reliable procedures to patients. She has cultivated a safe space where our patients can relax, have fun and feel empowered.

Dr Ruthy is well known not only for her quintessential skills and leadership in the field of aesthetic medicine but also for her philanthropic work around Launceston, Tasmania. She is also a goodwill ambassador, devoted to domestic and international global oral health awareness and education.
