About Our Speakers:


Dr Michaela von Geijer

Michaela von Geijer has long clinical experience, with a particular interest in prevention and oral health. She has always placed a high value on working with a preventative focus. Dr Von Geijer has held temporary preclinical positions as amanuensis at the University of Lund, including basic research and assistance with education/training at the medical and dental schools. She also has experience lecturing to professionals when employed by pharmaceutical companies as well as companies within the dental industry. Since 2015 employed by TePe and a lecturer at universities around the world. Dr von Geijer combines working as a private dentist with the work at TePe HQ in Sweden.

Dr Arthur Drouganis
Periodontist and Implant Surgeon
Dr Drouganis is a periodontist with over 3 decades of experience. The first half of his career he practiced as general dentist and second half as a specialist in the fields of Periodontics and Dental Implantology. He holds undergraduate and post-graduate degrees from Adelaide University and has published papers in national and international journals on periodontics. Dr Drouganis has also conducted post graduate courses at Adelaide University and has dedicated part of his time as an undergraduate tutor. He prides himself on practicing cutting edge techniques which will improve the overall results to his patients.

Dr Harry Perkins
Harry graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2015 and has worked as a general dentist in rural and metropolitan practices. In 2017, he joined TAFESA's Advanced Diploma of Oral Hygiene program as a lecturer in epidemiology. Interested by forensic science, he completed an Honours degree in Dental Science and a Graduate Diploma in Forensic Odontology in 2019. He works with the Forensic Odontology Unit of South Australia and has been assisting the Coroner of South Australia and SAPOL in cases involving forensic odontology for five years. Harry is also currently pursuing a PhD research project on the application of 3-D images in dental identification casework. Additionally, he's the Chairman of the South Australian Dental Associations Practice Support Committee for 2023 and a non-voting member of the Forensic Odontology Technical Advisory Group for ANZPAA NIFS. He's also the Public Officer for the South Australian branch of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (ANZFSS). In late 2022 he started as the Coordinator of the Community Outreach Dental Program at the University of Adelaide, helping run the Light Square Common Ground Dental Clinic where free dental work is provided to marginalised community members through donations and volunteered time.

Dr Michael Findlay 
MBBS, MPHTM, FRACGP, FACHAM

Dr Michael Findlay is an Addiction Medicine Consultant at DASSA, with a special interest in the crossover between pain and dependence, having previously worked in both General Practice and Correctional Health settings. Dr Findlay is a member of the Statewide Chronic Pain Network.

Pathways to Implant Success - Dr Michaela Von Geijer
Patients may believe that implants are an easy solution for missing teeth, but the occurrence of peri-implant diseases are increasing and becoming a significant problem around the world. As clinicians we have a responsibility to contribute to the patients´ knowledge related to dental implants to improve and contribute to healthier implants. The lectures will provide you with tips and actions on how to enhance oral health in patients with dental implants.

Diabetes – How To Make An Impact As A Dental Professional - Dr Michaela Von Geijer
Diabetes is a dramatically growing disease, affecting hundreds of millions worldwide at enormous societal costs. Topical research proves a bi-directional link between periodontal disease and diabetes and that periodontal health benefits diabetes patients. Thus, as dental professionals, we are undoubtedly in the position to impact and reduce diabetes complications – but are we ready to do what it takes?

 
Learning Objectives:

• Be aware of the prevalence and development and risk factors of peri-implant diseases
• Be able to recognize and differentiate between peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis
• Be able to plan and implement effective maintenance visits
• Be able to adapt the patients home care routine to improve plaque control around their implants
• Help patients to select and use oral hygiene products that are effective for their specific implant design
• Applying contemporary knowledge to recognise and advise patients already diagnosed or in the risk zone for diabetes, as well as address common patient concerns and lifestyle factors.

Demystifying LANAP - Dr Arthur Drouganis
A summary of laser assisted periodontal therapy and why in particular this laser: “Periolase MVP-7. “
This presentation will discuss:
- The LANAP Protocol and its effects on the supporting periodontal structures
- The application of LANAP all forms of periodontal diseases
- Show patient results on short-term and long-term (9 years postop)
- Post-op management 
- The LANAP Protocol and its effects on the supporting periodontal structures

- Demonstrate that Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT) is another adjective tool that can be used in the management of periodontitis.
- Demonstrate LAPT can provide very good and stable long-term results.

Failing Implants & LAPIP - Dr Arthur Drouganis
This presentation will discuss:
- The LAPIP Protocol and its effects on peri-implantitis
- Demonstrate the results of clinical cases of pre-and post LAPIP
- Discuss post-op management 

Forensic Odontology - Dr Harry Perkins 
The presentation with provide an overview of forensic odontology, with an emphasis on the use of 3-D records for human identification. It will also discuss current research being conducted within the SA jurisdiction and at a national level, highlighting potential issues surrounding dental clinical record management.

What Do Alcohol & Other Drugs Have to Do with Teeth? - Dr Michael Findlay
Alcohol and other drug use is common. The aim of this lecture is to familiarise attendees with common substances used, provide some guidance on how to discuss them with patients and where patients can be referred for help.
