Focus on Transgender - Andrew Terry

It's white and opaque, so what do I do? - Prof. Laurie Walsh
This lecture explores the clinical topic of enamel white spot lesions, beginning with some recent research into the importance of developmental enamel defects as a caries risk factor, and then moving into the recognition of different conditions which can cause a number one spot lesions to develop both prior to and following tooth eruption. Armed with this information, the lecture then moves on to discuss treatment strategies for reducing the visible appearance of white spot lesions, including microabrasion and the use of topically applied CPP-ACP (Tooth Mousse), giving examples of various clinical protocols and where and when they are used. The lecture will also include discussion of the role of a varnish delivery system for CPP-ACP and how this can address issues around patient compliance.

Bad habits that leads to bad outcomes: the connections between lifestyle and oral health - Prof. Laurie Walsh
Around 25 years ago intense research into the connections between lifestyle habits and oral health began to inform our understanding of the risk of dental caries and dental erosion. This lecture begins with the start of this journey, and then moves into the modern context to discuss the importance of ionic imbalances and dysbiosis which is driven by lifestyle habits. The contributions of oral piercings and tobacco usage will also be discussed, as well as both legal and illicit drugs and their oral health impacts. Armed with this information, clinicians should be more confident beginning interventions with patients that tackle these lifestyle behaviours.

Beyond Gum: Periodontitis and Systemic Conditions - Dr Lizzy Hua
It is important for any oral health practitioners to recognize we are treating patients rather than the compartment of oral cavities. The ever-emerging evidence indicates that inflammatory profiles have significant roles in impacting ones’ overall health. Periodontitis has been linked with different systemic disease as an inflammatory condition. It is a constant potential source of infection and has been considered as a risk factor for some conditions burdening our society the most, namely cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and reproductive system related abnormalities. Oral health impacts on the general well-being, and if comprehensive, holistic approach is ever to be achieved, oral health should not be undermined.

- Acknowledge the correlation in disease pattern and treatment impacts between periodontal disease and various systemic conditions with focus on metabolic conditions, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and pregnancy

It is essential that every staff member in the Dental practice has an evidence based understanding of the importance of infection prevention and control and a critical skill in the process is risk management.

Speaker Biographies:
Andrew Terry
Andrew Terry is a Lecturer working for the Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Dentistry. He works with both the Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programs since August 2015.
He is responsible primarily for the education of Periodontal instrumentation/screening and Oral Hygiene instruction education for both the BOH1 and DMD1&2-year levels. He supervises clinical practice of the initial Clinical Periodontal treatment provided by DMD2 students. Since 2017 he has been a Unit of Study Co-ordinator for the BOH1 student subject OHRL1102/1202. He is responsible also for the education/appointment of Clinical Educators for DMD1&2 Periodontic department. He is a member of the Pride Network at The University of Sydney and is the School of Dentistry LGBTIAQ+ student liason officer. He was appointed as the School of Dentistry Academic Simulation Clinic Coordinator at the end of 2019.
Andrew still works in private practice on Saturdays and has a special interest in providing caring treatment for HIV and Hep C positive patients. He has approximately 27 years’ clinical experience first qualifying as a Dental Therapist in QLD, Australia in 1993 and then as a Dental Hygienist in London, U.K in 1998. He ratified his Australian and U.K education in Switzerland with the Swiss red cross and attained the protected title of “Dip. Dental Hygienist of Higher Education”. He completed his Master in Education in 2019. He has worked in Townsville, Brisbane, London and Zurich. He has been based in Sydney for 14 years now.
Prof. Laurie Walsh
Emeritius Professor Laurence J. Walsh AO is a registered specialist in special needs dentistry.
Laurence received his undergraduate education in dentistry at The University of Queensland and then undertook a PhD in immunopathology. He started his postdoctoral education at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and undertook his executive education at the Stanford University Graduate School of Management and at Harvard University.
His research interests are in advanced technologies such as lasers and biomaterials, and in dental microbiology. Laurence was Professor of Dental Science and the research grouip leader for advanced materials and technologies in the UQ School of Dentistry from January 2000 until his retirement in December 2020. During his retirement he remains active in hands-on research work and in supervision of research students.
Rochelle McPherson
Rochelle runs a private, orofacial myology practice in Sydney, OM Health, bringing a unique, holistic approach to patient care. She incorporates a team approach with other health professionals to assist in a greater level of health and well-being. Rochelle treats children of all ages through to adults. Her special interests include, Orofacial Growth and Development, Orofacial Pain and Sleep Disordered Breathing.
Rochelle is a lecturer at the Australian Academy of Orofacial Myology. She is committed to advancing Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in Australia through best practice and continuing education. Rochelle regularly conducts training and mentoring for other practitioners in this field.
Dr Lizzy Hui
Dr Lizzy Hui graduated from the prestigious University of Otago in New Zealand with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2010. She has since contributed vastly to Australia in both private practices and hospitals across both regional and metropolitan areas in NSW, QLD and WA for the past 11 years. During which, she has attained a Master of Medical Science in Pain Management from the University of Sydney in 2013. This as laid fundamental platfor for her reputable pain and anxiety management in dentistry.
In 2017, Dr Lizzy Hui sold her private practice in Wollongong and embarked on her new journey in specializing Periodontics and Implantology. She has successfully completed her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontics) in 2019 from Griffith University in Gold Coast, QLD and relocated to Newcastle, NSW with her family. She has established a locally renowned specialists practice looking after the New England Hunter community. Moreover, she has been dedicating herself for education whether as a speaker at conferences, as clinical supervisor for the next generation of dentist at the University of Sydney or as an examiner of the Australian Dental Council.

Karyn Gardner
BOH, BHSc (hons)
Karyn began working in the Dental Industry in 1990. Beginning her career as a Dental Assistant, Practice Manager and later qualified as a Dental hygienist from the University of Newcastle, Bachelor of Oral Health program, graduating with honours in 2009.
Karyn has always had a passion for training and mentoring staff, maintaining compliance and high dental practice infection control standards and continuing education.
Recently completing a Certificate of foundations in Infection and control, Karyn is a current member of Australasian College of Infection Prevention and Control, she works as an Infection Control Consultant. Karyn is a qualified Trainer and Assessor, with TAFE NSW and holds certificate in Work Health and Safety. In addition to continuing to work in Industry, she is training the next generation of Dental Assistants, Dental Radiographers and Sterilising Technicians.
