Workshop Details

Radiography practical refresher

Refresh your knowledge and improve or consolidate your practical skills for digital dental radiography. This hands-on workshop provides you with an opportunity to apply and practice the basic principles for taking intraoral dental radiographs. After a theoretical introduction and explanation of how to use the specialised equipment (60 minutes), you will refine your skills in taking bitewings (with cardboard tabs and Kwikbite devices) and periapical radiographs (using paralleling and bisecting techniques). You will work in La Trobe University’s Rural Health Schools’ dental clinic.

You will take multiple radiographs on dental manikins, with guidance and support of experienced oral health educators. Your practice time in the clinic is maximised. With only eight participants per practical session (120 minutes) and access to two educators, there is plenty of time for discussion and practice. You can choose which techniques you want to develop further, to provide you with an individually tailored practical learning experience.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  1. Apply the principles and procedures for taking periapical and bitewing radiographs in a simulated environment.
  2. Demonstrate the processes required to safely expose and process intraoral digital radiographs using phosphor plates.
  3. Assess and discuss diagnostic value and potential operator errors of digital radiographs.

Hall Technique

The Hall Technique is an effective approach to managing early childhood caries without the need for local anesthetic or cutting of the tooth to remove infected enamel and dentine. In this ‘no needle, no drill,’ method, a preformed metal crown is placed directly over the affected tooth.

This workshop presents contemporary evidence from Australia. You learn how to offer an alternative option to the traditional management methods for caries.

A practical session guides you through the steps involved in the Hall Technique. You will get sufficient time and opportunity to practice the technique on manikins. Enthusiastic and experienced oral health educators will be available to support and guide you. At the end of this training a formative assessment will demonstrate that you are ready to apply the Hall Technique in your clinical setting. You are invited to bring your own cases for discussion.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  1. Consider the latest evidence in minimal intervention dentistry.
  2. Describe indications and benefits of using the Hall Technique.
  3. Apply the Hall Technique in a simulated clinical setting.
  4. Support treatment and care planning decisions to change clinical practice.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

This interactive course is suitable for oral health practitioners with an interest in minimal intervention dentistry. The training will provide a comprehensive overview of current trends and evidence in minimal intervention dentistry. You will learn through a step-by-step guide how to perform Silver Diamine Fluoride applications.

The hands-on component will allow you to practice with varied materials and systems in the application of Silver Diamine Fluoride and Silver Fluoride. The learning environment provides a near to authentic experience in the simulation labs of La Trobe’s Rural Health School Dental Simulation Clinic.

You are invited to discuss cases that interest you, with your peers and experienced oral health educators in a supportive environment. Discussions include pediatric, aged care, special needs, and outreach care cases. The care planning and case discussions are evidence-informed, guided by minimal intervention dentistry principles and person-centered care. You are invited to bring your own cases.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  1. Consider the latest evidence in Silver Diamine Fluoride applications and use.
  2. Describe the benefits and limitations of using Silver Diamine Fluoride
  3. Apply Silver Diamine Fluoride in a simulated clinical setting.
  4. Support treatment and care planning decisions to change clinical practice.
