Vaping & Oral Cancers - Alex Dreyer
The transition of scientific research into practice and public awareness has always been stunted by industry interference. In the case of tobacco products, there is a long history public opinion conflicting with accepted science, and this disconnect is beginning to emerge again in the case of e-cigarettes and vaping. While the evidence is gaining impact almost daily, it is important for all health professionals to know the state of play for research into e-cigarettes, why it is clouded by industry and advertising, and what we can do about it. E-cigarettes and vaping also pose a specific threat to oral health, of specific interest to your audience. The constituents of e-cigarettes and e-liquid that pose this threat, whether proven or theoretical are explored in an oral health specific evidence update. Finally, public health has determined that all health professionals may play a role in reducing the health impact of e-cigarettes and vaping. This session will conclude with practical advice for use in practices and other settings that can be used immediately to help counter the harm reduction narrative.

Learning Objectives

  • Cancer, “Big Tobacco” and a history of scientific research
  • The future of tobacco research and innovation
  • E-cigarettes and e-liquids; where are we now and where are we headed?
  • E-cigarettes and oral health – evidence update
  • What role YOU can play in reducing the health impact of e-cigarettes
