Lecture Synopsis:
Oral health care for children with special needs - Stephen Moor
This presentation will highlight the importance of oral health care for children with special needs and demonstrate the important role our profession plays within an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary team for this population group. The implementation of an oral health care plan is essential in the overall health management of children with special needs.
Stephen hopes his presentation will interest you in providing oral health care to children with special needs including children diagnosed with ASD, cerebral palsy, complex medical conditions and children born with a cleft lip/palate and cranio-facial anomalies.
Stephen Moor
Stephen Moor is an oral health therapist with 35 years experience and has been employed by the children’s oral health service for the last 23 years. Stephen has developed an interest in patients with special needs and has been an member of the multidisciplinary cleft team for 23 years.
Risky sexual behaviours in adolescents and young people: How does this impact on oral health? - Linda Trewin & Leah Hobbs
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are a serious, yet largely preventable, health risk, especially for adolescents and young adults 15-25 years. The incidence and prevalence estimates that young people make up half of all new STI diagnoses and young people continue to be significantly impacted by STI. The rate of STI are substantially higher in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Many young people engage in risk behaviors and sexual experiences that can result in unintended health outcomes, including oral health outcomes. Collectively, the majority of cases of infection with STI in young people remain undiagnosed and untreated and the oral health practitioner has the ability to refer for management.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand risky behaviours and their potential impact on oral and overall health
- Integrate and apply knowledge, skills and clinical judgement of assessment for patients in a range of environments
- Provide safe and competent oral health clinical care for patients including identifying patients who require referral pathways for complex care outside your scope of practice
- Advocate for, and promote, oral health to individuals and groups across diverse community settings in a variety of formats

The battlefront is evolving: when tooth movement is not wanted - Dr Christopher Barker
Our understanding of Periodontal disease includes that it is not just a response to the presence of bacteria. Other factors, such as traumatic occlusive factors and movements, can significantly impact the rate of progression or recovery. This lecture aims to provide an overview of the current understanding of considering occlusive factors and how we can manage them or where to find additional support if it falls outside the scope of confidence.
Learning Objectives:
- What are the causes of mobility in teeth?
- When is mobility physiological and when pathological?
-
How do we diagnose traumatic occlusion?
- How to diagnose Bruxism?
- Does Occlusal trauma cause periodontal disease?
- Can Occlusal trauma complicate periodontal disease?
- How do we treat teeth with mobility caused by traumatic occlusion?
- What are the reasons we might need to stabilise teeth with physiological mobility?
- What are our main options for stabilising mobile teeth with healthy but reduced periodontium?
