Lecture Synopsis:

Myths & Challenges the World Has Faced Through the COVID Pandemic: A Public Health Perspective for Dentistry
- Winthrop Professor Marc Tennant AM 

Marc will discuss the public health response to the currently unfolding pandemic response and cut through some of the myths and mis-information using the data and science to clearly define what has gone to-date and what it means to our future. Marc will also discuss what this means in the wider context of disaster preparedness for us as a society and delve into some of the grand issues that have come to the fore over the last couple of years. An exciting and at times controversial walk down the road of being prepared.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Be aware of the myths in the public health responses to COVID

2. Gain a deep appreciation for the history of pandemic responses and what is learnt

3. Appreciate the role everyone plays in addressing the ongoing problems

Speaker Biographies

Winthrop Professor Marc Tennant AM

BDSc PhD FRACDS(GDP) FADI FICD

Marc is currently a Winthrop Professor and is the Director (and Founder) of the International Research Collaborative - Oral Health and Equity at UWA and is Deputy Chair of the Academic board, the peak academic body of UWA. In 2022 he was appointed to the Order of Australia for services to oral health and the community. Marc has nearly 300 peer-review publications to his name in fields as diverse as Vascular Biology, Neuroscience, Geography, Dentistry, Health Systems and Veterinarian Science. Intertwining his love of data and addressing health inequality his primary work focus is on dental health. He is currently on the board of the RACDS and the Director of Oral Health for WA Country health service. He consults globally with governments and institutions and has reviewed health systems across Australia and overseas for nearly 20 years. He is renowned as an extremely engaging speaker; travelling the world to keep science and data at the forefront of people's minds.
