Pathology of the face, jaws and oral mucosa
This presentation is a series of cases of pathology, which can present in usual and unusual ways. The scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery will also be discussed, in order to understand the reasoning behind referral, and to gain some understanding of management of patients with, or at risk of oral pathology.

E-cigarettes: public health and clinical considerations for the dental hygienist -Sinan Brown
What is the contemporary global evidence on a range of issues related to e-cigarettes?
Sinan will discuss research evidence related to e-cigarettes, including prevalence of use and their impacts on health, smoking uptake and smoking cessation. Implications for public health and clinical practice will be a key component of this talk, as well as the role of the tobacco and e-cigarette industries, recent changes in Australian legislation, novel nicotine delivery products (e.g. nicotine pouches) and debunking common myths and misconceptions surrounding these products.
At the conclusion of this talk, participants will understand:
- What an e-cigarette is and their patterns of use in the Australian context
- Evidence on health impacts associated with e-cigarette use, with an in-depth understanding of outcomes related to oral health
- Evidence regarding e-cigarettes and smoking uptake and smoking cessation

Speaker Biographies
Dr Jacqueline Dobes
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon
Dr Dobes obtained her medical degree from the Australian National University, and developed an interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery during her time as a junior doctor. She pursued this career, and returned to university to complete her dental degree at the University of Sydney.
Dr Dobes obtained her Master of Philosophy in Surgery through research at the ANU, and received her surgical specialty training in Canberra, Newcastle and Sydney. During her training, she served as the trainee representative in the ACT/NSW regional surgical committee, as well the committee for Continuing Professional Development.
Dr Dobes is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at The Canberra Hospital, and divides her time between public and private practice. She enjoys teaching medical and dental students as well as junior doctors.Dr Dobes holds all of the accreditations, recognitions and licenses to practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
Aside from her surgical specialty, she devotes her time to her active young family.
Dr Clarence Da Cruz
Periodontist
Dr Clarence Da Cruz joined CIPC in 2023. Dr Da Cruz is a registered specialist periodontist trained at the University of Melbourne where he obtained his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontics. Dr Da Cruz also holds a Bachelor of Science majoring in Immunology and Microbiology from the Australian National University, a Bachelor of Dental Science from Charles Sturt University and Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) with awarded commendations for academic excellence in his primary examination. Dr Da Cruz was also recognised for excellence in clinical research of which he was awarded with The Australian New Zealand Academy of Periodontology (ANZAP) research medallion prize.
Furthermore, Dr Da Cruz is a former Clinical Director, current Senior Lecturer and current subject co-ordinator at Charles Sturt University’s School of Dentistry and Medical Science. He is a member of ANZAP, Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP), Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS), and The International Team for Implantology (ITI).
Sinan Brown
PhD Candidate
Mr Sinan Brown is a first-year PhD candidate and research officer at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH), Australian National University (ANU). For over four years he has been heavily involved in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) research, focusing on their impacts on health, smoking uptake and smoking cessation.
His PhD is investigating e-cigarette use patterns and tobacco product transitions among Australian youth, as well as the influence of industry marketing strategies. He holds a Bachelor of Medical Science and Master of Public Health, both from the ANU, and also spent six months at the University of Texas at Austin for an undergraduate exchange.
